India at Rio, Day 5: Indian archers, Manoj Kumar raise expectations after Jitu Rai's heartbreaking exit

Deepika Kumari and Bombayla Devi, along with boxer Manoj Kumar, brought smiles back on the faces of Indian fans with their dominating performances on Day 5 at Rio.

Rio De Janeiro: While India is still waiting for its first medal at Rio Olympics 2016, several Indian athletes put a good show on Day 5 of Rio Olympics 2016.

Bombayla Devi and Deepika Kumari, two of India's most experienced archers, impressed with their performances as the duo advanced to the pre-quarters of individual competition to keep India's medal chances alive in archery, a sport which has seen a rebirth in the country.

Competing in her third Olympics, the 31-year-old Bombayla, who finished 24th in the ranking round, dished out a dominating show to get the better off Chinese Taipei's Lin Shih-Chia 6-2 in the 1/16 elimination after beating Austria's Laurence Baldauff in 1/32 elimination round.

Deepika too put up an excellent show as she comprehensively defeated Italy's Sartori Guendalina 6-2 in the 1/16 elimination after prevailing over her opponent from Georgia, Kristine Esebua, 6-4 in the 1/32 elimination round.

Earlier in the day, there were huge expectations from Jitu Rai, but the ace shooter faltered once again after failing to qualify for finals of men's 50m pistol event, which is his pet event.

The 28-year-old Rai ended 12th with a total of 554, missing the final by two points.

Jitu's compatriot Prakash Nanjappa also failed to make an impression in the same event.

Another bright spot for India on Day 5 was boxer Manoj Kumar's qualification in men's light welter (64kg) pre-quarters. He defeated London bronze medallist Evaldas Petraukas of Lithiuna 2-1 in a close bout.

India's women hockey team suffered successive defeats, after being thrashed 1-6 by a rampant Australian outfit.

India's weightlifting campaign also came to end with Sathish Sivalingam failing to make the finals of men's 77kg event.

India's lone Judoka Avtar Singh lost to Refugee Olympic Athletes' Popole Misenga, originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in the men's under-90 kg elimination round of 32.

In tennis, Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna's first round mixed doubles match against Australia pair of Sam Stusor and John Peers was postponed due to bad weather.
