New Delhi: Tennis bad boy Nick Kyrgios beats Marin Cilic in the final of the Marseille Open to capture his first ATP World Tour title on Sunday
Unseeded 20-year-old Australian played like a real champion to upset the fourth seed Croatian 6-2, 7-6 (7/3) in one hour 27 minutes.
Currently ranked 41st in the world, Kyrgios broke the former US Open champion twice in the first set, which lasted 36 minutes. But the second set proved altogether a different ball game, as the fourth-seed dug deep to save four break points including a match point.
But the Aussie talent won the match in tie-breakers, thanks to two back-to-back mini breaks in Marseille.
The powerful Aussie had previously defeated two top 10 players in Tomas Berdych and Richard Gasquet to reach his second ATP final. He lost to Richard Gasquet of France in the final of Estoril Open last May.
Kyrgios did not lose a set all week and did not drop serve in any of his matches. And in the process, he became the first player under the age of 21 to beat top 10 opponents in consecutive matches since Juan Martin del Potro at the 2009 US Open.
