New Delhi: The 41-match winning streak by world No. 1 pair of Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza finally came to an end on Thursday as the Indo-Swiss duo lost a match at the Qatar Open.
They were defeated 2-6, 6-4, 10-5 at the hands of Russian pair Elena Vesnina and Daria Kasatkina in the quarter-finals.
Prior to the defeat in Doha, the last time the pair, who have won three doubles Grand Slams in a row, had lost was way back in Cincinatti last August.
However, in Doha, Hingis and Mirza were looking a bit off colour , as they even struggled in the previous round, where their match went to three sets against an unseeded Chinese pairing.
And eventually, they lost in the quarter-finals, despite dominating the first set against the Russian pair.
Prior to Qatar, their form this year has been magnificent and the Indo-Swiss pairing won four titles, including titles in Brisbane and St Petersburg, as well as the Australian Open.
But by losing in Qatar, they missed the change to create history by breaking the world record for maximum consecutive matches won in women's doubles.
Back in 1990, the dynamic duo of Jana Novotna and Helena Sukova won a whopping 44 matches in a row.
