As many as 115 villages in four districts bore the brunt of the earthquake that rocked Maharashtra on September 5, resulting in damage to over 350 houses and injury to one person, official sources said on Friday.
The total damage to property, which included a gram panchayat office, a Ganesh temple and three wells, was estimated at Rs 40 lakh, the sources said. The epicentre of the quake, which measured 5.2 on the Richter scale, was 20 km from the Koyna reservoir, the sources said, adding that the safety of the dam was reviewed again in the wake of several after-shocks and no danger to it had been noticed. Meanwhile, speaking on the issue, Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh told reporters that the process of fortifying dams in the quake-prone areas was currently on as per the recommendations of a committee set up after the killer Latur earthquake of 1993. A total of Rs 35 crore had so far been spent on fortifying the dams, he said, adding that various steps had been taken to strengthen the houses in quake-prone regions.
