Chennai rains: Anna University, University of Madras postpone exams

Eight persons have died so far since the onset of the northeast monsoon in Tamil Nadu on October 27.

CHENNAI: Due to heavy rain across Tamil Nadu, Anna University and University of Madras have cancelled their semester exams.

Besides the above-mentioned universities, Ethiraj College for Women and Loyola College and Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University have also delayed their scheduled examinations, according to reports.

The state-level National Talent Search Exam scheduled Saturday was deferred to November 18.

Schools and colleges have been closed since October 31.

Rains on Saturday continued to lash this metropolis and neighbouring districts of Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur besides other regions of Tamil Nadu, even as the MeT department forecast more rainfall due to a low pressure area persisting in the Bay of Bengal.

A Met bulletin on Saturday said the low pressure area over southwest Bay of Bengal, adjoining Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu coast and the associated cyclonic circulation extending upto 3.1 km above mean sea level continued to persist.

With the northeast monsoon active in the state and neighbouring Puducherry, Chennai city (Nungambakkam) recorded 65.8 mm of rainfall while suburban Meenambakkam registered 62 mm rains in 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Saturday.

The state government has started mobile medical camp in Chennai, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts to prevent spread of diseases.

Commuters are having a harrowing time with rains affecting bus and train services. Traffic moved at a snail's pace in many areas.

Chief Minister K Palaniswami had on Friday visited many waterlogged parts of the city and the suburbs, insisting that his government was working on a "war-footing". His deputy O Panneerslevam and senior officials had accompanied him.

Actor Kamal Haasan in a tweet appreciated the state police for their efforts in the rain relief and rescue work.

He also urged his fan club members to carry out relief work without hindering or mocking the government workers.
