Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy on Sunday fired a salvo as Tamil superstar Rajinikanth announced his decision to make his political debut with a new party. The BJP leader termed the move by the actor as mere ‘media hype’ calling the superstar “illiterate”.
Talking to ANI, the Rajya Sabha MP said that “people of Tamil Nadu are intelligent”, adding that there’s no substance in the announcement made by Rajinikanth on his political debut.
"He only announced he is entering politics, had no details or documents, he is illiterate. It's only media hype, people of Tamil Nadu are intelligent," said Swamy.
This came after Rajinikanth declared that he would launch his own political party and contest the next Assembly elections on all seats of Tamil Nadu. The veteran actor made the announcement at Chennai's Sri Raghavendra Kalyana Mandapam.
While making the announcement, the actor said that he was joining politics to bring change. “In the name of democracy, politicians are robbing us of our own money on our own land. We need to bring a change from the base,” he said.
He added that “truth work and growth will the three mantras” of his political party.
Rajinikanth said that he would launch the party at an appropriate time and would bring his thousands of fans association together for the purpose. “People from all walks of life, from villages to cities need to come together,” he added.
The actor further said that people from other states are laughing at Tamil Nadu because of the political situation in the state. He called the politics in Tamil Nadu “rotten”, saying that the state needs a transparent political party.
Meanwhile, TTV Dinakaran, who recently won the RK Nagar Assembly bypolls with a huge margin, was quoted by reports as saying that Rajinikanth’s foray in politics would not have any impact. He said that there could be any other MGR or Jayalalithaa in Tamil Nadu.
