Indian online learners have higher benefits than global peers

New Delhi: Indian online learners have greater career and educational benefits as compared to their peers in the US and UK, says a Coursera survey.

Among working professionals and job seekers, 89 percent of Indian learners reported career benefits compared to 84 percent globally, while the number stood at 84 percent in the US and 86 percent for the UK.

Moreover, in India, 46 percent of career builders reported to have become better in their jobs, and 39 percent said they have improved their candidacy for a new job.

"Since Coursera launched five years ago, online learning has transformed from an experiment in MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) to a widely accepted choice among Indians looking to acquire new skills," Coursera Chief Business Officer Nikhil Sinha said.

Over two million Indians have registered on Coursera to date.

According to the survey, 98 percent of Indian learners seeking educational outcomes reported benefits, higher than the global average (93 percent).

Moreover, Indians were much more likely than learners in other markets to report benefits such as gaining knowledge, deciding on an area of study, and earning credits.

The Coursera Learner Outcomes Survey is based on 13,917 responses globally, and 756 Indian learners who completed a course on Coursera from March 2015 through June 2016 (responses collected from March 2016 to Dec 2016).

Coursera is an online education company that partners with world's 150 universities and education institutions to offer courses.

Since its launch in 2012, the company has 25 million registered learners who can choose among 2,000 courses and 180 specialisations available to be enrolled in at any time.
