We are designing technologies for next 10-30 years: HP Inc

Cannes: Everyone knows that HP Inc is a PC and printer major but the company doesn`t only focus on delivering technology for on Wednesday but is looking to build products for the future while keeping a tab on the demographic and socio-economic changes globally, a top company executive has stressed.

According to Shane Wall, Chief Technology Officer at HP and Global Head of HP Labs, the company`s focus is on developing technologies the world is going to embrace in the next 10-30 years.

"We don`t focus just only on current-day technology but also look to design for humanity-at-large. We focus on mass urbanisation, growing populations and the expectations that come along -- both on global and local levels. We foresee tech problems around the world and try to solve them at our Labs," Wall told IANS during a media interaction at the just-concluded 14th Cannes Film Festival.

HP Labs is working with anthropologists and sociologists to design future products.

"At HP, we are always doing new things. We run HP Labs with a focus on advanced parallel processing architecture, fundamental science and health care, etc.," Wall emphasised.

A few years ago, HP made a conscious decision that it will explore the consumer space more instead of just focusing on market share.

"The decision was to explore gaming, virtual reality (VR) gaming system, premium category products and design which has helped us succeed so far," he added.

HP Tech Ventures is a new corporate venture arm that will invest and create partnerships with startups to explore emerging technologies like 3D transformation, immersive experiences, hyper mobility, Internet of Things (IoT) and `smart` machines.

"We are investing and working with startups on new-age technologies. We work on 3D printing and immersive experiences with photographers the world over. Our research takes years before we have a new technology in place," Wall told IANS.

On HP Studio`s much-awaited co-venture `Manto`, which is about the celebrated Urdu writer Saadat Hasan Manto directed by Nandita Das, Wall said: "Just like `The Wolf`, the film is yet another HP effort to deliver great experiences with the help of its technology to millions across the globe".

`The Wolf` is a four-part web series from HP Studio -- its first product -- that stars Hollywood actor Christian Slater and focuses on how easy it has become to hack into corporate systems via smartphones and printers.

"When we look at long-term products, we see that cyber security and privacy have become serious issues. Our Labs have a hardware layer of security and technology that check intrusion at deep levels," Wall noted.

HP Studios is co-producing `Manto` with Viacom 18 and Mantoiyat Film Company (created by Movie Makers Partnership and Nandita Das Initiatives LLP).

HP products -- both personal systems and prints -- are used from end-to-end to bring `Manto` to life.
