Got more recognition from TV than films: Ashish Chowdhry

Mumbai: Actor Ashish Chowdhry, who has worked on both television and films in his decade-long career, credits small screen for making him a household name.

The actor says more than films, TV gave him a privilege to choose good work. "When I came in films I was like why should I do television now. I said no to TV and I realised I did forget my roots... Like where I came from.

"The kind of fandom I got from television I have not got in films. Also, the role selection that I got to do in television was not in films. But that doesn't mean I look down upon films. I believe in waiting for the right offer," Ashish told PTI.

After the actor lost his sister and brother-in-law in the 26/11 attacks, his family business got crashed and he went on a sabbatical for four years.

"While I was taking care of my entire family I realised that I can't depend on this profession just for money as that's when you start signing wrong projects and you are not happy with your work and can't deliver your best."

The actor says if an artiste is passionate about acting then medium doesn't really matter.

"Every actor lives in a dilemma of whether this is right or that is right. If you make it like a hobby and if you like what you do then the medium doesn't matter, be it television or films or digital or theatre. There has to be a passion for acting."

Ashish is excited about his next television show "Dev", in which he plays the role of a detective.

Showcasing stories inspired from true life events, this fictionalised investigative thriller takes viewers into the world of Dev Burman (Ashish), a mystery solver. 

According to the actor, the genre of detective series is not explored much, be it on the small or films, but Ashish says he likes taking risk.

"It's a risky show as it is different, not a regular daily soap. I am not against 'saas-bahu' show, you give audience what works. It is important to take a risk and reinvent yourself. I am hopeful the show will get respect."

Talking about his character, Ashish says, "Dev is the most exceptional character that I have come across... He is sharp, witty and blatant, rude yet emotional, outspoken yet mysterious. The show has been shot like a film and it is my most exciting project till date."

He further reveals, the makers are already thinking about more seasons.

"There is so much one can say through this show, there are so many back stories that we can explore."

The 26-episodes, multi-layered series also features Sumona Chakravarti, Puja Banerjee and Amit Dolawat in pivotal roles.

Produced by Peninsula Productions, the show will premiere on August 5 on Colors channel.
