LUCKNOW: Days after the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh changed the names of two districts - Allahabad and Faizabad - to Prayagraj and Ayodhya, respectively, a formal proposal has now been sent to the state's Governor seeking his approval to rename Allahabad University as Prayagraj State University.
According to reports, the Vice-Chancellor of Allahabad University has sent a proposal in this regard to the state government for its approval following which it will be sent to the state's Governor Ram Naik for clearance.
State's Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma had earlier said that since the name of Allahabad has been changed to Prayagraj, it's obvious that there would be demands to rename other institutions in the district.
''There is a demand to rename Allahabad State University and Board of High School and Intermediate to Prayagraj," Sharma had said
It may be recalled that the state cabinet recently gave its nod to rename the Allahabad and Faizabad divisions.
The Faizabad division, consisting of Ambedkar Nagar, Amethi, Barabanki, Ayodhya and Sultanpur districts, has now come to be known as Amethi division.
The Allahabad division, which consists of Prayagraj, Fatehpur, Kaushambhi and Pratapgarh districts, has been renamed as Prayagraj division.
The Allahabad High Court also recently dismissed a PIL challenging the renaming of Allahabad as Prayagraj, saying the petitioner should first approach the Uttar Pradesh government with the grievance.
The renaming of Allahabad and Faizabad divisions had sparked a debate and triggered demands for renaming other cities and vital institutions across the state.
BJP lawmaker Sangeet Som has demanded that the Muzaffarnagar district be renamed to Laxminagar.
Similarly, a BJP MLA from Agra, Jagan Prasad Garg, said that he would be meeting Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for demanding that the district be renamed to Agrawan.
