The JD(U) leader also attended a dinner later in the evening hosted by Prime Minister Naredra Modi in honour of outgoing President Pranab Mukherjee.

The meeting comes amid tensions in Bihar's grand alliance over allegations of graft against the Yadav family, including Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi.

The two leaders reportedly held discussions on the current political situation in the state.

Party sources said Kumar drove to Gandhi's Tughlaq Lane residence here and discussed about graft charges against Tejashwi Yadav.

Talks between Nitish and Tejashwi last week do not seem to have smoothed the political ripples.

Kumar's meeting with Gandhi comes days after Congress President Sonia Gandhi spoke to the Bihar CM and RJD chief in a bid to prevent a collapse of the ruling coalition.

While the RJD supremo has rejected demands of resignation of his son, Kumar is learnt to have reservations about Tejashwi's continuance as it dents his "anti-corruption" image.

Kumar-led JD(U) had also crossed swords with the opposition over its support to NDA's presidential nominee Ram Nath Kovind. The opposition had pitched for Meira Kumar as its joint candidate for the presidential polls.

The JD(U) leader will be in Delhi for four days, during which wil also attend the oath taking ceremony of Ram Nath Kovind as new President.
