New Delhi, Aug 29: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on Tuesday approved increase in the minimum support prices (MSP) for various Kharif crops, including paddy, pulses, oilseeds and cotton ranging between Rs 15 and Rs 110. MSP for paddy, common variety, has been raised from Rs 490 to Rs 510 per quintal, while for the A grade, the new price is Rs 540 against Rs 520 per quintal. Agriculture Minister Nitish Kumar said the MSP for jowar, bajra, maize and oilseeds like ragi, sunflower sesame and nigerseed had also been sent up. The CCEA increased support prices for pulses like arhar, urad, moong and soya bean. It has also increased MSP for cotton from Rs 1,775 to Rs 1,825 per quintal for H-4 (long variety) and Rs 1,625 from Rs 1,575 for other varieties. Kumar said the burden on subsidy had not been calculated as yet. “The price increase in these paddy crops would not have any impact on the inflation rate since MSP is always lower than the market rates,” he said, and added that farmers needed to be compensated for the increase in the cost of inputs like diesel and fertiliser. — UNI
