New Delhi, Aug 29:: Former South African president Nelson Mandela will inaugurate the third five-day international conference of farmers at Bangalore on Oct 2, the Gandhi Jayanti Day, to develop an alternative model of production and marketing in the agriculture sector. Mandela will also address a public rally of farmers at Bangalare to be organised by the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS). The conference, organised by the Via Campesina, an international farmers’ movement, will dwell on issues including food security for all, fair practices in world trade, bio-diversity, human rights, agrarian reforms and intellectual property rights. La Via Camesina South-Asia Coordinator Prof M.D. Nanjundaswamy told the media here on Tuesday that the other issues to be taken up include trade and investment in agriculture, genetic resources, gender issues in agriculture. Over 250 delegates of as many as 68 countries from all continents and India will take part. Out of these, 50 delegates are from India, while 100 men and as many women are from foreign countries. — UNI
