Visiting Chinese leader Li Peng on Monday met Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and exchanged views on a wide range of regional, international and bilateral issues. The meeting takes place in the backdrop of Vajpayee sharing the Chinese leader`s view that there was need to build trust between New Delhi and Beijing. In his talks with Indian leaders, Li, the second-most powerful leader in China after President Jiang Zemin, had made it clear that China had never taken India as a threat and neither did it intend to pose a threat to it. Vajpayee had told reporters on Sunday that he hoped a satisfactory solution would be found soon to the boundary dispute between the two countries. In a statement on his arrival from a two-nation visit, he said, “As two great civilizations and neighbours, India and China are engaged in the process of rejoining and putting behind us past differences and forging a new and dynamic relationship for the 21st century for the benefit of our two countries and the world.” Bureau Report
