NHRC seeks provision for rehabilitation of displaced in LCA
Concerned over the plight of the people displaced by various projects, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed that provisions for resettlement and rehabilitation of such people be made a part of the `land Acquisition Act` (LCA) or a separate legislation be enacted so that such provisions were made justifiable.

“The commission was of the view that the government should, while recommending the policy, provide in the policy itself for it to be incorporated into an appropriate legislation within a given time-frame,” NHRC said in a directive on Tuesday.
The commission said that it was pursuing the matter with the Ministry of Rural Development for an early finalisation of the draft policy on the subject.
NHRC received a petition by the National Committee for Protection of Natural Resources (NCPNR), wherein it was mentioned that LCA, 1984, which was still in force and proposed to be amended by the government, did not contain any provision for resettlement and rehabilitation of the people affected by projects.
