Fiji’s director of public prosecutions Josaia Naiqolevu said on Thursday that George Speight, the leader of Fiji`s coup and his co-conspirators will appear in court by Saturday. George Speight is currently held on an island off the capital Suva and must appear in court by 10 pm (local time) Saturday or be released. Speight will appear on four minor charges including unlawful assembly. It is not clear yet whether he will be tried for treason. He was arrested by the army a week ago. The coup leader has been held under emergency powers, which give magistrates the right to detain him for seven days before a court appearance. Unless Speight pleads guilty, his first court appearance will merely set the date for further hearings.
