This year's Diwali release, 'Thugs Of Hindostan' saw a mammoth opening on its first day and broke all the previous records as it went on to collect Rs 52 crore at the ticket windows. However, upon its release, the film received mixed reviews and saw a major dip in its collection on the consecutive day.

The film could earn only Rs 29.25 crore on the day two taking its total collection to Rs 81.50 crore. Noted trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared the latest business collections of the film writing, "#ThugsOfHindostan.....HINDI: Thu 50.75 cr, Fri 28.25 cr. Total: 79 cr. TAMIL + TELUGU: Thu 1.50 cr, Fri 1 cr. Total: 2.50 cr. Total: ₹81.50 cr [5000 screens]. India biz. #TOH."

While Amitabh and Aamir's portrayal in the film received praises from critics, Vijay Acharya's direction and screenplay have been severely criticized.

It is to be noted that 'TOH's first day collection in India is the highest for any Hindi film, at Rs 52.25 crore nett, surpassing the previous opening day records held by 'Happy New Year' (44.97 crore), 'Baahubali 2' (Hindi, 41 crore), and 'Prem Ratan Dhan Payo' (40.35 crore).

Produced on an estimated budget of Rs 300 crore, 'Thugs of Hindostan' is the most expensive Bollywood film. Initially titled 'Thug', the film marked the first collaboration between Aamir and Bachchan while it was the second collaboration between Khan, Vijay Acharya and Katrina, after 'Dhoom 3' (2013).

Initially, Hrithik Roshan was approached with the film's leading role, who suggested some changes to the script, which was agreed by Aditya Chopra. In the meantime, Acharya approached Aamir with the script, who agreed to do the film with no changes to the storyline.

Later, in November 2016, Aamir too requested the filmmaker to rework the script, particularly the character of the leading actress, and put the project on hold. Meanwhile, he grew his hair and beard for his look in the film.
