Mumbai: Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan's magnum opus 'Thugs of Hindostan' may not have garnered rave reviews from fans and critics alike, but the visual-effects extravaganza has minted over Rs 50 crores at the Box Office.

The Vijay Krishna Acharya directorial has raked in the moolah to become the top-grossing film of this year by minting over Rs 50 crores on the opening day. The film released in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu across the country during the auspicious festival of Diwali.


Trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to Twitter on Friday to share the latest collection report.


He wrote: "#ThugsOfHindostan smashes *all records* [Hindi films] as it breaches ₹ 50 cr on *Day 1*... Sets new BENCHMARKS in some circuits... Big holiday [#Diwali] + tremendous hype + massive screen count help put up a SENSATIONAL TOTAL...(sic)."



The film which also stars Katrina Kaif, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub and English actor Lloyd Owen has created three records. 


Thugs of Hindostan has also become the highest grossing film released on Diwali.

The film has surpassed Ranbir Kapoor's Sanju, Salman Khan's Race 3, Akshay Kumar's Gold and Tiger Shroff's Baaghi 2 to become the top-grosser of this year so far.

The trade analyst added: "H-I-S-T-O-R-I-C *Day 1 biz* was expected, but the real test for #ThugsOfHindostan begins from *today onwards*... Will have to maintain the pace over the weekend [Fri to Sun] and *also on weekdays* to put up a MASSIVE TOTAL... Wait and watch situation right now! (sic)."



Expressing his take on the film, Taran Adarsh after reviewing the film tweeted: 



Aamir, who plays Firangi Mallah in the film has undergone a major transformation to justify the character.  Big B as Khudabaksh looks like a warrior who is also a farmer, Fatima as Zafira comes across as the daredevil while Katrina as Suraiyya is the ultimate siren.


Set in the backdrop of India under the British rule in the 19th century, Thugs of Hindostan is inspired by Philip Meadows Taylor's 1839 novel Confessions of a Thug. It revolves around the life of a thug and his gang who challenge the British Empire in the country.
