New Delhi: Are you planning to buy luxury or SUV car this New Year? Well, it would be wise on your part if you can put the decision on hold for some time.

We say this because of the Supreme Court's order to ban the registration of diesel vehicles in Delhi with engine capacity of more than 2000 cc for three months from January next year on a trial basis.

The SC on Wednesday announced a slew of measures, among them banning registration of diesel-run SUVs and cars having engine capacity beyond 2000 cc till March 31, 2016.

SUV and luxury car makers in India like Toyota Innova, Mahindra and Mahindra Scorpio, Tata Safari and Sumo and top luxury brands from the stables of Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi seem to be getting the worst blow following the court order.

The apex court has also increased the Environment Compensation Charge on commercial vehicles entering Delhi.

It may be recalled that the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had last week ordered that no new diesel vehicles were to be registered in the national capital and urged the Centre and state to consider not buying any more diesel vehicles.

The tribunal said that it would review the order on January 6, 2016, after taking into account the interim period.
