Chennai, Dec 12: Amendments to the Tamil Nadu Marine
Fishing Regulation Act, 1983, stipulating the norms for
mechanised boats and traditional fishing boats, would be
expedited and introduced in the next Budget Session of the
Tamil Nadu Assembly.
This was one of the 46 decisions taken at the three-day
conference of district collectors and police officials that
concluded here tonight.
An official release issued tonight on the decisions taken at the meeting said that a new fillip would be given to the family-welfare programme. Emphasis would now be given to male sterilisation overcoming inhibitions which were not valid and out of date. The meeting also decided to provide telephones to all Taluk hospitals and to all Public Health Centres in the 385 Panchayat Unions which were being upgraded to 30-bedded hospitals. Nearly 500 doctors would be recruited shortly both in specialities and in the general line for being posted in government headquarters hospitals in the districts where there was shortage of doctors. All the 29 district collectors would be given a lap-top computer, the release said.
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa asked the collectors to play a pro-active role in seeking out problems and issues and working out innovative solutions, besides taking concerted action to put down extremist activities. She also sanctioned Rs 30 crore for taking up water supply works in the districts affected by adverse seasonal conditions.
