Ritu Beri becomes advisor for Khadi promotion

New Delhi: The Ministry of Micro Small and Medium Enterprises is implementing several schemes for the holistic development and promotion of khadi.These include strengthening of infrastructure of existing weak Khadi Institutions and assistance for marketing infrastructure provides for renovation of khadi sales outlets.Ace fashion designer Ritu Beri has said that as an advisor for Khadi promotion, she will do her best to make Khadi "a global fabric to reckon" with."Honoured to be advisor Khadi and Village Industries Commission," Beri tweeted on Thursday.BJP`s national spokesperson Meenakashi Lekhi congratulated the National Institute of Fashion Technology alumna."Congratulations! With hard work of both of you, Khadi, The Fabric of Freedom will become The Fabric of Republic," she posted on the micro-blogging site.Beri also shared that she "will do my best to make Khadi a global fabric to reckon with in times to come".The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) is a statutory body established by an Act of Parliament (No.61 of 1956, as amended by act no.12 of 1987 and Act No.10 of 2006). In April 1957, it took over the work of former All India Khadi and Village Industries Board.The KVIC is charged with the planning, promotion, organisation and implementation of programmes for the development of khadi and other village industries in the rural areas in coordination with other agencies engaged in rural development wherever necessary.
The Indian government has reestablished the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), the nodal agency for promoting khadi fabric in the country."1018 Khadi and Village Industries (KVI) Institutions are registered as members, while KVIC was granted Deemed Export Promotion Council status in December 2006.Five per cent of the free on board (FOB) value or Rs 10 lakh, whichever is less, is provided as incentive for KVI units which undertake direct exports.In addition, KVIC encourages Khadi and Village Industries to participate in international trade fairs by subsidising 75 per cent of the airfare and 50 per cent of stall rent to augment export of their products.In case of women entrepreneurs and institutions like ST, SC and NE States, air fare and stall rent are extended to the extent of 100 per cent subject to maximum limit of Rs 1.25 lakh each.The KVIC is charged with the planning, promotion, organisation and implementation of programmes for the development of khadi and other village industries in the rural areas, ministry also offers market promotion and development assistance, under which assistance is provided at 30 percent of prime cost of cost to be shared among artisans, producing and selling institutions. KVIC too is taking various steps to promote khadi by tying up with ecommerce portals, big malls etc. to promote khadi and increase its sale.
