Bhilwara, Nov 19: Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat may have said goodbye to politics after assuming a constitutional post but his name still figures in election campaign here, Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani said today.
Fondly remembering the doyen of Rajasthan's politics at an election rally here, the Deputy Prime Minister recalled the days of 1952 when Shekhawat was among two of the then Jana Sangh's eight MLAs who did not quit the party.
Advani said that the remaining six MLAs who were all jagirdars left the Jana Sangh as the party supported the congress move for abolition of zamindari.
He said that Shekhawat chose to remain with the Jana Sangh even though he was himself a jagirdar and supported the law against the old feudal system.
The Deputy Prime Minister said that Shekhawat had risen to the top because of his honesty, loyalty to the party, credibility and administrative efficiency.
Advani said that since then first Jana Sangh and then the BJP had been sticking to idealism, discipline and honesty and maintaining that promises made in poll manifestoes must be honoured.
