Nagpur, Apr 29: Congress was looking into the merits of demands for separate statehood for Vidarbha and Telangana, AICC General Secretary, Vyalar Ravi said here even as he ruled out the possibility of mid-term assembly elections in Maharashtra. The party has certainly not washed its hands off the statehood issue, All India Congress Committee General Secretary, Vylar Ravi told reporters here last night. Though Congress president, Sonia Gandhi has taken up setting up of a second State Reorganisation Commission (SRC) with the centre, it was aware of the sentiments of the people of both Vidarbha and Telengana, he said. Vidarbha protagonists, N.K.P Salve, Vasant Sathe and other leaders have already met the Congress leadership to present their case with facts and figures to justify their claim and neglect of the region all these years, Ravi added. The Pranab Mukherjee Committee, set up by AICC, was looking into the merits of the demand but was yet to arrive at a conclusion, he said. Asserting that the party has taken steps to strengthen the party, Ravi said Congress, alliance partner DF. In reply to government in the state, has already decided to hold party workers' meet at divisional level.Today's convention at adjoining district in Wardha is part of the exercise, Ravi, incharge of party affairs in Maharashtra, said.On continuing alliance with NCP, he said Sonia has already hinted at tie-ups with parties having secular credentials.
