Mumbai, July 15: Maharashtra government has asked the Centre to accord powers to police officers of the rank of deputy commissioner of police and superintendent of police to arrest and deport illegal Bangladeshi migrants from the country, the legislative council was informed here today. Replying to a query by Anant Tare (Shiv Sena) during question hour on action taken against Bangladeshi migrants at Mira Road in the neighbouring Thane district, deputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal said 43 such migrants were arrested.

The government had further initiated process of removing illegal migrants as per prevailing rules, he added.

To a demand by Diwakar Raote (Sena) that all foreigners staying here without valid visas be deported, Bhujbal, who also holds the home portfolio, said old rules proved to be a major handicap for immediate expulsion of the infiltrators. To remove the hurdles and send the infiltrators back, the state had asked the Centre to give powers to DCP and SP level officers, he added.

When reminded that a few Bangladeshi infiltrators have managed to get ration cards and their children were imparted education in a school in Mumbra, Bhujbal assured the house that action would be taken against those involved in issuing ration cards.

In a written reply to Sudhakar Gangane, Bhujbal said following the terrorist threat to blow off the Bombay Stock Exchange in May, security had been tightened and other steps were initiated to foil subversive designs of the ultras. He said 46 persons had been arrested so far in the fake stamp paper case while three others were absconding.
