Australia vs Pakistan 1st Test: Asad Shafiq`s ton in vain as Steve Smith & Co win by 39 runs
The tourists, who have now lost their last ten Tests in Australia, refused to buckle even on the final day.
Brisbane: Australia defeated Pakistan by 39 runs on Day 5 of the first Test match at Brisbane Cricket Ground on Monday. Asad Shafiq's brillliant 137-run knock went in vain as the visitors fell short by 39 runs.
Pakistan were bowled out for 450 on the final day.
Resuming play at 382/8, Shafiq and Yasir Shah continued to frustrate the Aussies as the pair added 71-run stand for the ninth wicket. The pair was looking good to pull off a miracle for Pakistan, before Starc removed Shafiq.
The left-arm pacer produced a brilliant bouncer in the 145th over, where the right-hander was taken aback and a top edge carried towards the slip cordon and David Warner held on to an easy catch.
New batsman Rahat Ali could not do much as Yasir Shah was run-out in the same over.
Earlier on Day 4, Shafiq scored three runs off a cut shot in the final over to reach his 10th Test century off 140 balls in the day-night match at the Gabba.
The tourists, who have now lost their last ten Tests in Australia, refused to buckle despite the loss of key batsmen Younis Khan, Azhar Ali and skipper Misbah-ul-Haq.
