The 31-year-old was, however, dismissed in a strange manner. After winning the toss, Tamil Nadu batted first at Feroz Shah Kotla ground, and the wicketkeeper-batsman was batting at 112 when a wide delivery from Mohammed Shami produced the unlikely wicket.

It happened off the third ball of the 49th over, with Shami sending down a full, wide delivery – which missed everyone, including the wicketkeeper. It went for a four, but while everybody was looking at a bemused Shami, a stunned Karthik stood still at the crease, unable to believe what he had done.

He got himself out on a wide ball.

Karthik's 112 off 120 balls helped Tamil Nadu post 217, which was just about enough for them. Bengal could muster only 180, to give Tamil Nadu a 37-run win, and the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
