Two ABVP members arrested for DU violence
Two ABVP activists have been arrested here on charges of attacking an AISA member at Delhi University.
New Delhi: Two ABVP activists have been arrested here on charges of attacking an AISA member at Delhi University, the police said on Wednesday.
Prashant Mishra, President of the Students Union at Sri Venkateswara College, and Vinayak Sharma, also from the same college, were taken into custody on Tuesday night.
They were identified on CCTV footage armed with belts and attacking a member of the Leftwing All India Students Association (AISA) near Khalsa College on Tuesday.
The RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Wednesday suspended the two.
ABVP member Prasanna Vaidya said the two were accused of attacking AISA activist Aman Sinha, who he added provoked the fight.
"Prashant and Vinayak should not have reacted to the provocation. We will have a complete investigation into the matter," Vaidya said.
"There were attacks from both sides. The video shows that," he said.
The arrests came hours after thousands of students marched through Delhi University on Tuesday to denounce the violence blamed on the ABVP in the campus on February 22.
