Yangon, Sept 27: Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi returned to her home tonight after being discharged from a Yangon hospital, witnesses said. People living near the Asia Royal Cardiac and Medical Center, where the 58-year-old Suu Kyi underwent surgery on Sep 18, said she left the hospital at 8:15 PM. In a two-car entourage which included her doctor. Neighbours near her university avenue home, who like the other witnesses spoke on condition of anonymity, said Suu Kyi arrived at her lakeside residence at 8:30 PM. A government statement issued after her return confirmed that she had gone home accompanied by two of her doctors.

``She will continue to rest at home under the supervision of her doctors while the government stands ready to provide and assist her with her medical and humanitarian needs,'' the statement said. It did not say whether she would be held under any special restrictions. Before entering the hospital, she had been held incommunicado by the government at an undisclosed location since the end of May.

Her doctor earlier Friday told diplomats and reporters that she would be held under house arrest after her return home.

She underwent what was described as a major three-hour operation last Friday. Her personal physician, Tin Myo win, has declined to specify the nature of the surgery, but other doctors have said it was a gynecological procedure.

Suu Kyi and many of her supporters were detained in May after a violent clash between some of her backers and a pro-government mob in northern Myanmar.
