Chinese premier Zhu Rongji and visiting German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder have started talks aimed at enhancing bilateral ties and boosting the US-led global coalition against terrorism.
Schroeder, who earlier arrived from India, is leading a high-level delegation consisting of over 180 people, including interior minister, economics minister, parliamentarians and entrepreneurs. The two sides will exchange views on important international issues including counter-terrorism, foreign ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi said adding China and Germany will sign a series of important agreements on cooperation during his visit.
Schroeder is scheduled to call on Chinese President Jiang Zemin on Friday.
Commenting on Schroeder's third visit to China, Sun said relations between China and Germany have developed rapidly in recent years due to joint efforts from both sides. He said the two countries' cooperation in such areas as politics, economy, trade, and science and technology, culture, education and environmental protection have been fruitful.
Sun said that the Chinese government has always attached importance to developing relations with Germany and its important role in European and world affairs. He said that under the present global situation, further strengthening Sino-German cooperation in various areas is not only in the fundamental interest of the two peoples, but also conducive to world peace and stability.
He also said that Chinese vice-president Hu Jintao, now on a visit to Europe, will meet Schroeder during his official visit to Germany.
