Guwahati, July 14: The overall flood situation in Assam continues to remain critical today with the Brahmaputra and its tributaries flowing above the danger mark in most of the 20 affected districts, though in some places water was showing signs of receding, official sources said here. The current wave of flood, the most severe in recent years, has killed 20 people, affected a population of more than 30 lakh, inundated more than 3,500 villages, rendered homeless 3,000 people and damaged crops in an area of 1,00,284 hectares.

According to Central Water Commission sources, Brahmaputra was maintaining a falling trend at Dibrugarh, Jorhat and Tezpur and a steady trend in Guwahati, Goalpara and Dhubri but in all those places it was still flowing high above the red mark. Most of the tributaries of the Brahmaputra like the Jiabhoroli, Burhidihing, Subansiri, Beki, Dhansiri, Puthimari, Sankosh, Pagladiya, Kopili and Desung were flowing above the danger level at their respective gauge stations.

The situation in worst-affected Dhemaji district along with some other districts like the Nalbari, Tinsukia, Dhubri, Morigaon, Lakhimpur and Sonitpur remains critical.

The flood affected national parks and sanctuaries like Kaziranga, Pobitora and Nameri also remain inundated though no further loss of wildlife has been reported. Bureau Report
