Kathmandu, Sept 03: Government forces killed 14 Maoist rebels in separate encounters in Nepal on Tuesday, as violence escalated in the Himalayan kingdom after the collapse of peace talks last week. Four rebels were killed in Khotang district and one each in Sarlahi, Taplejung, Kailali and Dadeldhura districts when the Maoists attacked security forces forcing them to retaliate, the defence ministry said in a press release.
Six Maoists were killed by police in a village in Biratnagar district when about 100 armed rebels attacked a bank to loot it. Six policemen, including a Sub-Inspector and several Maoists were injured in the encounter, a police official said.
However, the injured rebels managed to escape, he added. Violence has escalated in Nepal after the Maoists ended a seven-month truce last Wednesday following the failure of peace talks. Over the weekend, at least 21 Maoists and six security personnel were killed in separate firefights. Bureau Report
