Jammu, June 20: Jammu and Kashmir government today honoured two Army personnel for displaying exemplary courage while fighting militancy in the valley.
Jammu, June 20: Jammu and Kashmir government today honoured two Army personnel for displaying exemplary courage while fighting militancy in the valley.
A cheque of Rs 1,48,200 was presented to Santosh Kaur, widow of Ashok Chakra winner Subedar Surinder Singh of 3 Sikh Regiment whereas Naib Subedar Varinder Singh, winner of Sena Medal, was awarded Rs 25,250 at an impressive function at the Raj Bhavan by Governor S K Sinha.
Commanding a platoon deployed on the LoC in Rajouri sector last year in March, Surinder Singh shot dead two terrorists and took the grenade thrown by the militants on himself and consequently sustained multiple splinter injuries all over his body.
Despite grievous injuries, Subedar Surinder Singh continued to engage them and killed two more terrorists. However, he succumbed to injuries while being evacuated.
The Sena Medal winner Virender Singh, presently on duty with 9 Para (SF), displayed exemplary courage while busting a militant hideout at Kupwara district in 1998.
