Silver ornaments of the idols in the 11th century Lingaraj temple worth over Rs one lakh were stolen on Monday night.
According to Khurda district police superintendent A K Sharangi, preliminary investigation revealed that the miscreants broke into the strong room of the temple, opened the almirah and fled with the ornaments.
What has baffled the police is that the temple, protected by the Archaeological Survey of India as a national monument, has a massive boundary wall 520 feet long and 465 feet wide in the middle of the old city.
Police have sealed the main entrance for a thorough search and detailed investigation is on, the police said.
