Hong Kong, Apr 20: Seven more people have died from Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in Hong Kong, pushing the death toll in the territory to 88, the government said today. The latest fatalities included an 88-year-old man and two elderly women with chronic illnesses, a statement said.
But the other four patients were much younger, adding to a group of SARS victims whose recent deaths have raised fears that the little-understood disease is more lethal than originally believed. Another 22 new cases of SARS were reported today, bringing the number of people stricken with the disease in Hong Kong to 1,380, the government said.
It said 46 patients were discharged from hospitals today, raising the number of people who have recovered from SARS to 409. No cure for SARS has been found, although health officials say most sufferers recover with timely hospital care. Symptoms include high fever, aches, dry cough and breathing difficulties. Bureau Report
