Colombo, July 07: Tamil Tiger rebels have killed two people in Sri Lanka in their first assassination since a ceasefire with government troops went into effect in February, police said on Sunday.
A group of around 20 Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) guerrillas overnight surrounded the home of former rebel Thiagarasa Premadasa in the village of Soriwila, 231 km north of Colombo, his family told police.

Premadasa and a woman who was also in the house were killed by a grenade, Inspector Pushpakumara of the local police said.
Police said that Premadasa had been accused by the rebels of being a spy and acting as an informant for government troops.

The killings are not a violation of the ceasefire which came into effect on February 23, as it only bans attacks by the Tigers and government troops on each other.
