Islamabad, June 15: Pakistan does not expect any "preferential treatment" from its nominee Ehsan Mani who takes over as the new ICC president this week, Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Lt Gen Tauqir Zia has said. "We nominated Ehsan Mani for the post of ICC president because he was the best qualified to do this job," Zia was quoted as saying by 'The News' today.

"He is a very competent person who has been with the ICC for years now. We do not expect and would not want him to give Pakistan any preferential treatment in his tenure," Zia said in Karachi yesterday before leaving for London to attend the annual meetings of the ICC.

Mani has been Pakistan's permanent representative to ICC since 1989. He will take over from Australia's Malcolm Gray on Thursday for a two-year term.

Zia said Pakistan would expect Mani to urgently address important issues to increase the authority and powers of ICC.

"Pakistan has always believed that without the ICC being more independent and having more authority, it cannot deal consistently with problems of its member nations and the sport.

"We are confident that under the leadership of Mani, the ICC will be able to further promote the sport globally although Malcolm Gray has done a commendable job in difficult times for the sport," Zia said.
