Mumbai, Nov 10: In keeping with a judicial directive, Karnataka government today forwarded to the special investigating team in Maharashtra 56 audio tapes of 1,300
telephonic talks between prime accused in the multi-crore stamp paper scam Abdul Karim Telgi and others.
The tapes assume significance in the wake of allegations that Telgi bribed policemen to hush up cases against him.
The court had earlier directed Karnataka government to hand over the audio tapes of transcript of 1,300 telephone talks between Telgi and others by November 10. Karnataka government had expressed its inability to provide the transcripts of all the talks saying it was time consuming because the conversations were in various languages such as Hindi, Urdu, Kannada, Marathi and English.
The court directed the state to instead produce the audio tapes if the transcripts were not ready by November 10. The direction was given by a bench headed by Chief Justice C K Thakker on a bunch of public interest litigations filed by social activist Anna Hazare and others.
In keeping with a judicial directive, court-appointed Director General of Police S S Puri would submit report on November 12 on alleged role of Mumbai Police Commissioner R S Sharma and other top officials in the scam.
In this regard, Sharma was summoned by Special Investigating Team (SIT) at Worli on November 8 and 9 for questioning in the case. The SIT, on November 7, arrested Joint Commissioner of Police (Intelligence) Sridhar Vagal for his alleged complicity in the crime.
