Ranchi, July 23: Barring incidents of stray violence, situation remained peaceful on the second day of the 48-hour MCC called Jharkhand bandh which partially affected the rural life of the naxalite-hit state as the police launched raids at the hideouts of the ultras today. The bandh, called against the verdict of a Hazaribagh court which awarded death sentence to three MCC extremists for Beltu massacre two years ago, had its impact in rural areas of Palamu, Garhwa, Latehar, Lohardaga, Gumla, Chatra, Simdega, Giridih, Chaibasa, Bokaro and Ranchi.
However, the townships were not affected by the bandh.
"A long exchange of fire took place between the security forces and the extremists near Dania railway station between Gomo and Barkakhana midnight last night," Bokaro Superintendent of Police, Anil Palta, told.
"There was no casualty from our side. But it is not known whether they (ultras) suffered any," Palta said.
In two encounters last evening, one CRPF sub-inspector, Baiskakha Singh, died at Bundu, about 35 km from here, while the ultras had to retreat after police attacked them at Sahdag village under Bishrampur police station in Palamu district.
Additional Director General of Police J B Mohapatra said to ensure safety to railway passengers and property adequate forces had been deployed along the railway tracks.
The ultras made abortive attempts to cause major damage to the railway property yesterday.
Due to security reasons, the authorities diverted as well as cancelled some trains. Some long distance buses were also cancelled while others were running with police escort.
