New Delhi, Sep 01: The Supreme Court has clubbed the petition filed by Zaheera Sheikh, the key witness in the Best Bakery case, along with the petition filed by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). The court will hear the petitions on September 12.
The NHRC petition seeks the transfer of the Best Bakery case as well as four other Gujarat riot related cases for trial outside the state.
Zaheera has also filed a petition seeking police protection. "Our petition has been admitted by the Supreme Court. I have full faith in the apex court. We have all also filed a petition asking for protection," she said.
A mob had ransacked and torched the Best Bakery on March 1, 2002 at the Hanuman Tekri area and slaughtered 12 people during the post-Godhra communal violence. The apex court also took up the petition by the Gujarat government challenging the bail granted by its state high court to the four accused in the attack on the Sabarmati Express in Godhra. The court has reserved its verdict in the case.
The HC had earlier upheld the bail granted to the accused on the grounds that there was not enough evidence against them to link them to the gruesome attack.
Fifty-nine people were charred to death when miscreants torched the S-6 bogie of Sabarmati Express on February 27 last year, sparking off worst-ever communal riots in Gujarat.
