At least 25 policemen were killed in a Maoist attack on a police post in Rukumkot, in Rukum district Monday morning, initial reports said. In another incident two bombs were set off at wee hours on Monday by Maoists at the houses of former I G of Police in Kathmandu and former M P from the Nepali Congress party Lekhnath Neupane in Bhaktapur. Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Ram Chandra Poudel has flown to Rukum to assess the situation.
The bombs went off almost simultaneously around 5.45am although no one was injured. The bomb at Neupane’s house was placed in his cowshed and damaged a compound wall while the explosion at Kharel’s house in front of the gate shattered windowpanes of a neighbour’s house. The insurgents have called a nation-wide strike on Friday to protest what they call government excesses. Kharel is on the Maoist hit list for what they call his excesses during his tenure.
