Guwahati, Nov 21: With the situation limping back to normal, curfew was relaxed for three to ten hours in eight towns across Assam, where the death toll in the backlash against Biharis went up to 32 with two more persons succumbing to their injuries. An official spokesman said there was no report of violence in the five affected districts of Tinsukia and Dibrugarh in upper Assam and Nalbari, Dhubri and Bongaingaon in lower Assam and the situation was returning to normal.
The army staged a flag march in worst-hit Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts to restore confidence among the people, he said adding that there was no further exodus.
"Following reports of the exodus yesterday from in and around Guwahati, officials and the district administration visited the Bihari-dominated areas and urged people not to leave as all measures had been taken to protect their lives and property.
Two persons in Bongaigaon, who were injured in violence, died of their injuries yesterday taking the toll to 32, official sources said.
Curfew was relaxed for three hours in the morning from 11:30 am in Tinsukia town and for 10 hours in Duliajan, Namrup, Tingkhong, Moran, Khowang, Tengakhat and Nalbari, the sources said.
