at a meeting of the new MLAs.
His name was proposed by PCC president D Srinivas, who was also said to have been one of the contender, and seconded by senior leader K Ranga Rao.
Mid-way through the two-hour meeting, Congress general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad and Reddy called up party chief Sonia Gandhi "to take her clearance", J Geeta Reddy, state mahila Congress president told reporters after the meeting.
Reddy, 55, was the CLP leader and leader of the opposition in the dissolved assembly and had been a member of the Lok Sabha for four terms earlier.
