New Delhi, June 29: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today said it was difficult for the state government to contain militancy until the Centre took up the issue of insurgency camps operating from Bhutan. "In fact, the number of camps (insurgent groups) have gone up in Bhutan. Besides, camps of ULFA and NDFB, there are camps of KLO also. Bhutan and Assam border is unguarded today," he said.

It would be "very difficult" for the Assam government to check insurgency in the state till steps were taken to close down insurgency camps in Bhutan, Gogoi said.

The chief minister, who yesterday claimed a drop in insurgency and criticised the Centre for seeking to pull out security forces for deployment in other states, also demanded more forces for the state.

He said the security forces were there but not sufficient enough to handle militancy.

Earlier, he said the extremists were targeting "soft" areas like Bhutan border, Arunachal Pradesh and north Bengal "as developmental initiatives of my government have helped in weaning away the young generation from the path of militancy".

He also said the insurgency problem in the North-East could not be rooted out unless training camps in Bangladesh, Bhutan other neighbouring areas were closed down.
