New Delhi, Jan 31: Going against the opinion of many an expert, former Test cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has advocated that India stick to the pair of Sourav Ganguly and Virender Sehwag in the opening slot in the World Cup.
Describing Ganguly-Sehwag pair as the "ideal" opening combination for India, Manjrekar said there was no need to promote Sachin Tendulkar at the top.
"Ganguly and Sehwag form an ideal opening pair. It might change if they don't click in a few matches but as of now I think that is the best combination for India," Manjrekar said last night at a function to unveil BBC world's cricket programming in the run-up to the World Cup. The debate over where Sachin Tendulkar should bat has intensified in recent weeks with many former players saying the master batsman should be brought back at the top to take maximum advantage of his brilliance and experience. However, Manjrekar felt Tendulkar was more useful in the middle order.
"I think Ganguly also thinks that way and he would continue to open with Sehwag in the World Cup. I feel that's the right move," he said. Manjrekar was also of the view that both Ganguly and Tendulkar should bowl more often.
"I have been saying this for quite some time now. Ganguly can be very useful on the South African pitches. And Tendulkar, with his variety, is always an asset."
Manjrekar felt Sanjay Bangar may turn out to be a crucial man in the World Cup in the role of an all-rounder. "He has been surprising everyone with his performances. He might pull off something special at the World Cup too."
