Kanpur, Jan 14: The severe cold wave in Kanpur city and adjoining areas claimed life of a security guard while the closure of educational institutions was extended till January 18 as the mercury dipped to one degree celsius here today.
This was another coldest day after January 10, when the mercury had dropped to zero degree celsius, local met office sources said, adding yesterday's minimum temperature was three degree celsius.
With the death of a security guard in Manpu under Sikandara police circle of Kanpur rural yesterday the toll rose to eight in the current cold wave, the official sources said. The unconfirmed reports claimed that a dozen people have died in the industrial city. The district administration has further extended the closure of all educational institutions till January 18 keeping in view of cold wave conditions.

The normal life in the city was disrupted due to icy winds and dense fog which affected the vehicular traffic and movement of trains. The district administration and social organisations have arranged for bonfire and distributing of free tea to the poor.
