Washington, May 05: India and Pakistan continue to be on the US ''priority watch list'' for inadequate and ineffective enforcement of patent laws. The US Trade Representative's Office listed the EU, India and 13 other countries on priority watch list for laxity in enforcing intellectual property protection.

US accuses countries on priority watch list of failure to crack down on counterfeiting of goods such as compact discs and drugs that robs US companies of up to 250 million dollars each year. In its annual report, the US Trade Representative's Office elevated five countries - Egypt, South Korea, Kuwait, Pakistan and turkey apart from Argentina, the Bahamas, Brazil, Indonesia, Lebanon, The Philippines, Russia, and Taiwan to its priority watch list for intellectual property theft.

It also identified problems with copyright and patent protections in 52 countries.

The report credited India with improving its IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) regime, but faulted it for weak protection of intellectual property in some areas due to ''inadequate laws and ineffective enforcement''. Ukraine was designated a ''priority foreign country'' – the worst ranking -- because of its repeated failure to protect US compact discs, DVDS and computer software from piracy.

Both have been in that category for several years without USTR taking that step.
