Gangtok, Oct 15: With a view to having a university of its own to govern its colleges, the Sikkim government will soon start working on the creation of the infrastructure needed for it, official sources said here today. The state assembly had passed a bill providing for the establishment of a university of its own during its budget session in February this year, they added.
Colleges all over the state including the oldest Sikkim government college at Tadong, the Law College in the state capital and the government college at Namchi have for years been affiliated to the North Bengal University.
Education department officials here said the government is actively planning to implement provisions of the act without further delay.
Arranging funds required for the project, appointment of a vice-chancellor, a registrar and other key officials to the university is being thought over at present.
Sikkim government has long been seeking to have a university here which could properly look after the affairs of the government colleges across the state.
Chief Minister Pawan Chamling had even raised this issue at the north eastern council's 48th meeting here last month where he had demanded an economic package of Rs 383 crore from the council proposing to spend a major chunk of this money on key sectors including education.
