Jakarta, July 28: Myanmar's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi will be released "one day," the military junta's foreign minister said, giving no indication when this would be despite growing international pressure on the regime to free her. Win Aung told late last night that Myanmar had yet to formulate a policy on the release of Suu Kyi, who has been detained since a may 30 clash in northern Myanmar between her supporters and a pro-junta mob.
Win Aung was scheduled to explain Suu Kyi's detention in talks with Indonesia's president Megawati Sukarnoputri and foreign minister today.
"She will be free ... one day," Win Aung said on his arrival in Jakarta yesterday. "We will announce (it) when the time comes."
Myanmar has remained defiant in the face of international demands to release Suu Kyi, refusing to say where the Nobel Peace Prize laureate is being held or when she will be freed.
The 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations, which Indonesia currently chairs, is also under pressure to help find a solution to the deadlock.
Earlier this week, Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad warned that Myanmar could be expelled from Asean as a last resort if Suu Kyi is not released.
Win Aung will attend a meeting of Asian and African government officials in the west Javanese town of Bandung tomorrow. Bureau Report
