Singapore, Nov 06: Personal Computer sales in the Asia-Pacific countries, including India, rose 11 per cent on the year to 7.7 million units in the September quarter, technology research firm Gartner said today. Compared with the previous quarter, the increase was 9.2 per cent.

Sales of portable computers soared 41 per cent to 1.2 million units from a year earlier, accounting for 16 per cent of total shipments. Desktop sales expanded six per cent, Gartner said.

Gartner analyst Lillian Tay said that the growth momentum in portable computers such as laptops should continue due to attractive prices and the growing popularity of mobile telecommunications.
Growth was registered across all but one of 13 major regional markets covered by the research.

Thailand led the pack with a 74 per cent increase, followed by New Zealand, Indonesia, India and Australia.

Sales in China grew only eight per cent but the country had the biggest market share of 46.4 per cent.
