Tokyo, Dec 26: A 35-year-old Nepalese man was arrested in Japan for allegedly smuggling a record $11.6 million worth of cannabis resin, police said today. The man, who identified himself as Nir Bahadur Gurung, was arrested on December 14 when he was caught at Narita Airport near Tokyo with 5.5 kg of hemp hidden inside calenders, said a spokesman at Chiba prefecture police.
Police found that the man had smuggled a total of 177 kilograms of the drug into Japan, with a street value of $11.6 million over a certain period of time.
The man, who lived in Tokyo, had been storing the cannabis in a number of warehouses.
"It is a record volume of hemp confiscated at one time," the spokesman said.
